Fundamentals First: Learning to Walk Before Running in the Age of Emerging Technologies
SACLA 2026, the 55th Annual Conference of the Southern African Computer Lecturers’ Association, will be hosted by the School of IT of the University of Cape Town. The conference will be held at the exquisite Protea Hotel Cape Town Waterfront Breakwater Lodge from 15 to 17 July 2026.
SACLA 2026 invites researchers, educators, and industry representatives to contribute to the discourse on computing education. The conference explores how we can strengthen the teaching of computing fundamentals while preparing students to navigate and leverage emerging technologies. In an era of rapid technological change, it is critical that students first develop a solid understanding of core principles before moving on to advanced applications.
SACLA (the Southern African Computer Lecturers’ Association) is a formal association of academics, involved in education, lecturing and teaching of Computer Science (CS), Information Systems (IS), and related Information Technology (IT) subjects at universities and other Higher Education Institutions throughout Southern Africa. The main activity of SACLA is an annual conference, at which issues relating to CS, IS and IT education, teaching and research in Southern Africa are presented and discussed.
The papers presented at the annual SACLA conference are published in accredited conference proceedings. For SACLA 2026, selected high-quality full papers will be published in a Springer Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS) volume, which is Scopus-indexed. All other accepted full papers will be eligible for inclusion in the SACLA 2025 local conference proceedings, which meet the standards required for DHET subsidy. The SACLA Programme Committee remains committed to maintaining the high quality of all accepted publications and to providing meaningful publication opportunities for researchers in the fields of Computer Science, Information Systems, and IT Education.
